Pickled Beets Recipe #2

2 1 pound cans whole beets
1 cup white wine vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3 whole cloves
4 whole black peppercorns
1 small bay leaf
2 medium onions, slices

Drain beets, reserving 1 1/4 cups liquid. Place beets in 2 quart sterilized jars. Combine vinegar, sugar, salt, cloves, peppercorns, bay leaf, and reserved liquid. Simmer 5 minutes. Place onions in jars. Pour hot liquid over beets and onions. Refrigerate.
