"Mardi Gras" is the day before Ash Wednesday and the final day of Carnival, the three-day period preceding the beginning of Lent. An occasion of great festivity and merrymaking, this wonderful holiday is celebrated in many countries, albeit under different names and for varying durations, with carnivals, masquerade balls, and parades of costumed merrymakers.

"Mardi Gras" (French for Fat Tuesday), or Shrove Tuesday (in the UK), is the last day of the period of carnival. Carnival is a celebration combining parades, pageantry, folk drama, and feasting which occurs between January 6th, each year and ends on Ash Wednesday, which marks the arrival of the fasting days of Lent.

Mardi Gras, also called Pancake DayPancake TuesdayShrove Tuesday and Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday"), is the last day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras depends on date of Easter (it always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday), a moveable feast, meaning the date of Mardi Gras also changes every year. It can vary from as early as February 3rd to as late as March 9th. from Wikipedia

In the United Kingdom, Ireland and parts of the Commonwealth, Shrove Tuesday is also known as "Pancake Day", as it became a traditional custom to eat pancakes as a meal. Elsewhere, the day has also been called "Mardi Gras", meaning "Fat Tuesday", after the type of celebratory meal that day.
